Heidelberg is a university town in Germany, and the church in this painting is the largest church in the middle of town. It was originally built as a Protestant church, and after it was built the king who lived up on the nearby hill converted from Catholicism to Protestantism. Then later it was used for both Catholic and Protestant services. The two congregations got along well and shared the church amicably; it was a great testament to ecumenical worship.
